Welcome, Ambassador Deborah Jones!

Since last September 11th, when Ambassador Chris Stevens was murdered in a terrorist attack, the US has been without an official ambassador to Libya.

That has now changed, with the arrival of the US Ambassador to Libya, Deborah Jones. Ms. Jones, a career diplomat, has worked for the US State Department since 1982, speaks fluent Arabic, French, and Spanish, and has several previous postings to MENA countries. Between 2008 and 2011, she was the US Ambassador to Kuwait.

I have confidence that Ms. Jones will strengthen the ties between the US and Libya, and will open new doors between our two countries. Hopefully in the areas that I believe strengthen ties most completely-- education, business (aka, commerce), and military cooperation.

I hope in the next few years, there are more Libyan students studying in the US, and more American students studying in Libya. It is my desire to do so, and hopefully once my enrollment at Western Governor's University is complete, my mentor/advisor will be amenable to a study abroad program at a Libyan college. My planned major is in either International Business or Global Business, and in time, I do hope to get an MBA. And perhaps, be involved in the import-export business, specifically of Libyan agricultural products such as olive oil, as well as cultural and craft items. In whatever I do, I hope to be an asset to the people of Libya, and to play a small part in the emergence of the country into the world market.

In any case, it appears that Ms. Jones' arrival in Libya is off to a good start, and that she will be a good fit for the position.

By the way, one of the best sources of news from Libya is the Libya Herald, http://www.libyaherald.com/-- it is truly on par with major US publications, and it's definitely encouraging to me to see a vibrant, free press culture in Libya after so many years of controlled rigidity under dictatorship.
