So, apparently, according to most of the world's legitimate (cough, cough) news outlets, Saif al Islam Gaddafi has been released from the prison of the Zintan militia which was holding him. Whether or not that's truly the case remains to be seen; this "news" has been reported before and found to be as factual as the tripe coming out of the POTUS' White House press office on a daily basis.
It might be an alternative fact, it might be more bullshit.
If it is true, I'm not sure what to think. I don't know if the Saif al Islam before 17th February 2011 was the real one, or the one that surfaced after the revolution. I also don't know if he-- or anyone-- could unify all of the conflicts that exist within Libya at the moment. They can try, but I don't think there's any easy answers. I've been talking to friends in the know (they know who they are), and we're all at the consensus that perhaps, East and West Libya need to fall away from each other for awhile before they can come back together.
What role Saif al Islam Gaddafi will hold-- or should hold-- is unclear. On one hand, when he was first in custody, he predicted EVERYTHING which has come to pass. Some could argue (and I wouldn't disagree) that it's because his father, as he lost power, released some of the ones responsible for the Libyan instability today. Others would argue that he actually KNEW what he was talking about, having seen the struggle to keep Libya's various tribes from killing each other off, all of his life.
I don't know what to think; I have the knowledge to know that I don't know enough.
It's sort of a case of me and my opinions on John McCain. Namely, I liked him in 2000, I didn't like him between 2000-2008 (including the election that year), and recently, I like/can respect his positions again. Or my opinions on Ted Cruz-- I have mad respect for the man. It takes immense courage to stand up against one's enemies, but even more to stand up to one's friends, like he did at the RNC last summer.
I have to post this song, because somehow, it seems appropriate.
Time will tell what happens.
I don't think things could get any worse, and if the "true" Saif al Islam Gaddafi is the one before 17th February, the one who tried, in vain, to reform, modernize, and, dare I say it, bring a form of "democracy" to Libya, may God be with him. It won't be easy, but then, nothing worth doing is.
And if the true Saif al Islam Gaddafi is the one whose voice came out after 17th February, then may God be with Libya and Libyans.
But I'd have to argue-- may God be with Libya and Libyans no matter what. Because ONLY IN HIM is there any hope for stability, prosperity, and most of all, PEACE.
