Islamophobia is the newest, ugliest form of bigotry out there. Whether it's politicians spouting off at the mouth about "Muslim bans" or "bans on immigration from any country 'compromised' by terrorism", or whatever other ugly thing said, it has become the new fad of bigots everywhere.
A terror attack takes place somewhere in the world; everyone is quick to blame ALL Muslims for it.
The ONLY one who SHOULD be blamed for it is the perpetrator(s). To demonize an entire religion for the actions of a VERY SMALL PERCENTAGE is extremely wrong.
To put things in perspective, there are 1.6 BILLION Muslims in the world, which is approximately 23% of the global population. While it is still second to Christianity with followers (Christians number 2.2 billion), Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world.
VERY FEW OF THESE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF THE FAITH have confirmed ties to terrorism, terrorist actions, and the like. The number is roughly, well, a ten-thousandth (or less) of one percent.
I do know a great deal about Islam, and have been asked by Muslim friends in the past why I'm not Muslim. Aside from the cheeky response ("I like bacon too much"), and the not-so-cheeky but entirely accurate one ("I lack the discipline that being Muslim would require of me"), religion is something I'm pretty passionate about. Religious choice is something I'm passionate about. And when any ONE religion is under attack, I feel that slipping away.
I'm Roman Catholic by CHOICE, married to a Maronite Catholic from Lebanon. His views on Islam are somewhat different than my own, likely due to how and where he was raised, and the things he has seen in his lifetime. He is, after all, 15 years older than myself.
Muslims are as victimized by terrorist acts as the rest of us, if not more so. How would you feel, when a heinous act goes down, if YOUR religion, your way of LIFE, was attacked? Especially when it was something you yourself also found despicable?
That's reality, folks, for the 1.6 billion Muslims around the world.
Islamophobia is something many Muslims WILL face. And it's something that all of us should attempt to stop whenever possible. I'm sure many of us who are in large cities will see a Muslim woman on a daily basis. I'm also sure, due to the climate some politicians have created, that we will see that woman attacked by an ignoramus of grand proportions.
This guide says it far better than I ever could, so I'll just end this post with it. What to do when you see Islamophobia
