In honor of my visitor from the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, I'll post what I believe is probably the wisest thing to be said about the situation in the MENA region... HRH Queen Rania Al Abdullah's comments on ISIS/ISIL, and the dangers of extremism in Islam.
Here's the article-- Queen Rania: Extremists Hijacking view of Arab World-- but to summarize, Queen Rania accuses (rightfully) organizations such as ISIS/ISIL and Al Qaida of hijacking and recoloring the world's view of the Arab world and of Islam in general. She goes on to state the importance of "taking back" the image, by not allowing them to take over, which silence does. And of the importance of providing long-term strategies to combat ISIS/ISIL, of which education is key. Her words say it best, "Our strategy must be long-term. And that starts by investing in quality education for all… And let me emphasize one point. When I said, ‘quality education for all’, I meant girls as well as boys. Because educated girls strengthen their nations’ economies… they prioritize the health and education of their own children… and they help to build stable societies more resilient to radicalization. Why else would Boko Haram, the Taliban and ISIS be so afraid of girls with books? Education reform doesn’t come cheap. But the price of ignorance is far, far greater." (NOTE: changed "emphasize, prioritize, and radicalization" to present spellings-- American English-- versus the British English spellings in original post).
Very, very true... and wiser words have rarely been spoken. Both Queen Rania and her husband, King Abdullah II of Jordan, know what they're talking about. I can definitely recommend purchasing any books written by either one... King Abdullah II-- Our Last Best Chance and Queen Rania Author Page (Link to "The Sandwich Shop").
